Over the centuries Northwest Coast Native peoples have adorned their bodies with art; historically with tattoos and labrets, and today the tradition has carried on with jewelry. Early contact with Europeans introduced new mediums and brought a new demand for smaller works. Artists began working in gold, silver, as well as argillite and experimenting with the traditional design and applying them to the new media.
