James Hart’s White Raven has been cast from his original red cedar carving that sits atop the Celebration of Bill Reid Pole at the Bill Reid Gallery of Northwest Coast Art. Hart conceived of this pole to celebrate the artistic leadership provided to him and many other indigenous artists by the late master carver. From the chest of Raven emerges a portrait of Reid. In addition to his prominent role in Haida history as a cultural hero, Raven was one of Reid’s family crests.
